Reflection of the COMP1900 course concepts on Browsers

Hello my fellow followers!,

I think the concepts of the COMP1900 course also apply to browsers that are used to browse the internet. They have an interface that is used by the computer user to input website URLs, bookmark websites and etc.
The browser makes the user able to use the different components of the computer like the CPU, the graphics card, to connect to the internet. In other words, the browser makes use of the power of the computer through it's interface. There are different browsers available to download and install on any computer (alternative software).

Moreover, there are now new browsers being developed by normal users (consumers) that have a Open Source. So the course's concept of 'from consumer to producer' also applies here.

Reflection of the COMP1900 course concepts on Programming of new software

Hey all,

I think the contents of the course is relevant to programming and making of new software like Windows.

If we are trying to make a new program like a new operating system we have to take all the course's major themes into consideration.

It has to have a good interface to mediate our experience. This highly affects how we can use our computer and how powerful the computer will be in a sense of usability and utility. We will have a wide range of software to install on the computer (alternative software for a specific task) and this should be noted when an operating system is being developed.
Other issues are also involved including ethical or privacy issues. Developers should respect the privacy of users and make decisions accordingly. As an example for this we can note the little amount of personal information that we send to developers company when a software crashes!

Reflection of the COMP1900 course concepts on my program of study

Dear bloggers,

I am studying bachelor of biomedical sciences and i think the major themes of the course apply to my program of study.
In science it is very important that we work with computer programs that have a easy to use interface (because what we are doing or trying to do with the software is already difficult!) so it would really make a difference if software could mediate our experience easily and that also makes us realize what we can really do with computers in relation to Science (power of computer). The course made us realize that there isn't only one software that we can use for a purpose and that is the case in science as well.
I know a few people who have a blog explaining about the projects on the internet, and the produces to consumer theme of the course really applies to that.

Topics to be added to the COMP1900 Course

Hey everyone,

I think the COMP1900 would benefit from the following topics added to the course:

1. Some basic programming, like Visual Basics (VB)
2. Some Flash or Java to accompany the HTML training in the course
3. Some knowledge of software packages such as basic financial management or MYOB

From consumer to producer

Hello avid blog followers,

The 'Consumer to Producer' argument is a very interesting concept. With advancing of the web technologies and the bring about of WEB 2.0 tools, people who were only browsing the internet for information (consumers) are now writing, publishing, and collaborating on the internet using technologies like blogs, wikis, Youtube, and slideshare. Some arising issues are ethics, privacy and copyright of the content already available online and you may not be able to 'just use'.
People (consumers) have personal ethics about how they view themselves. They should consider this when they are for example posting things on blogs; maybe one's belief is offensive to someone else. People's privacy can also be endangered online; your internet service provider can see the websites you have been to and control what you are able to browse. That is not real privacy...!

It is great that consumers are now producers, but we have to weight the good and bad for each before deciding if for example we want to own a blog :)

The alternative software

Hello my loyal followers....,

In Comp1900, we learnt that we don't have to use one software for a specific task, as alternative software capable of doing the same tasks might be available. In week 1 of the Comp1900 course, we learnt about the different operating systems like Vista, Macintosh and Linux.

Also, We looked at different word processing packages. Now a days, typing is one of the majority of tasks that is performed using a computer. Typing started with text editors that were able to create new text files in a limited way, there was no change of font or colour. Then we moved to word processing packages like Microsoft Word that is able to do so much more than just editing text, including checking the spelling and grammar in a document, and create documents using a template.
Alternatives to MS Word are Zoho, OpenOffice and Google Docs. Zoho is a package that includes spreadsheet and presentation, notebook, and chat. This package along with Google Docs also allows users to collborate documents, something that MS Word does not allow. OpenOffice is very similar to MSword but has the floating toolbar which enables the user without to not have to resort to multiple trips to a menu structure. some of these packages like google docs require an internet connection, whereas some like MS Word and OpenOffice do not. When different applications are used, the issues of compatibility, exporting arise.

We learnt this information in week 4 of the COMP1900 course.

The Power of Computer

Hi guys,

Here i meant to be talking about the 'power of computer'.

Computers have been in use for different tasks and purposes around twenty years. They have come a long way in regards to the design and functionality and even practicality in this time. Computers are very powerful devices in a way that so much can be done using them and most people are dependent on them these days.

One of the things that make computers powerful is the Internet. This means connecting computers together and transferring digital information from anywhere to anywhere in the world. The Internet is used for a variety of tasks including the transfer of digital information by the means of online chatting systems, electronic mail (email), and sharing of other resources and files on the Internet (Google docs for example). The Internet has lead to the use of the World Wide Web (WWW) where a variety of information exists in the form of documents. These documents were originally created for example by word processing software or spreadsheets or they can be simple photos stored and shared online.

It is worth mentioning the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web, as both terminologies are often used in the day-to-day life without much difference. The Internet is what computers use to connect to each other. It is the hardware and software infrastructure. On the other hand, the Web is one of the types of information like resources and documents (Web sites) transferred using the Internet.

Computers also allow us to collect and add data into databases, and visualize them to get a better understanding of what information they present and also the change of information.

These information is a very concise form of what we have been learning in COMP1900 during the whole semester (week 1 to week 13) which has made me realize the true power of computers.
